Trump, Democrats at odds over coronavirus economic proposals

The United States President Donald Trump and Congress are moving towards new legislation to support the US economy with competing priorities.

Democrats within the United States House of Representatives of Representatives want to focus any legislation on helping families that will be hurt by school and workplace closures.

Trump and Republicans within the Senate, meanwhile, have promoted the concept of a short lived elimination of payroll taxes as how to spice up the economy - an idea many Democrats have dismissed.

Fears over the continuing spread of the virus have rocked global markets, with Wall Street experiencing one in all its worst days since the 2008 financial crisis. Trump's announcement of a possible stimulus package helped recover a number of Monday's losses timely Tuesday.

Trump and vice chairman Mike Pence met at the White House with private US insurance executives who announced commitments to waive copayments and supply coverage for coronavirus tests and related doctor visits.

Trump said his administration was working closely with the cruise line industry and airlines to handle the consequences of sharp declines in travel.

Trump also met Senate Republicans on Tuesday to debate his proposals, but he continued to downplay the virus, despite a growing number of cases within the country.

"It will depart," Trump said after the meeting. "Just stay calm. it'll depart," he said.

There are now quite 900 people within the US infected with the disease, in line with the ny Times. quite 29 people infected by the virus have died within the US.

Pence confirmed presently Tuesday that the Trump administration's proposals include payroll tax relief and paid family leave. the precise details haven't been publicly released.

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin discussed the administration's proposals with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

"We're visiting work together on a bipartisan basis to work out how we are able to get things done quickly that are visiting help the Americans that are most impacted by this and small- and medium-sized businesses that are impacted," Mnuchin told reporters.

'Not just a tax-cut matter'
Trump faces political resistance in Congress, where Democrats generally oppose the concept of tax cuts and need an idea narrowly focused on the effect of the virus.

Democratic members of the House Ways and Means Committee emerged from a closed-door meeting at the US Capitol timely Tuesday saying they require to travel during a different direction from Trump.

"What we are arguing is that we want a more integrated approach on this, treating it as a public-health matter, not just a tax-cut matter," said committee chairman Richard Neal.

"I have yet to listen to anything from the administration apart from the suggestion of a payroll tax cut. The opening gambit here just demands a way more complicated series of solutions," Neal told reporters.

In the near term, a payroll tax holiday would help corporate cash flows and put dollars within the pockets of employees who receive regular paycheques.

"We don't simply accept the very fact that a payroll tax holiday gets to the people that you would like to induce it to," said Representative Dan Kildee, a Democrat member of the House Ways and Means Committee.

"It disproportionately affects people that make extra money. It disproportionately works against people that lose their job," Kildee said.

Democrats said they're viewing legislation, potentially little by little over several weeks, that may both address the coronavirus crisis within the US and supply support to the economy.

Pelosi and Senate legislator Chuck Schumer, the highest Democrats in Congress, put out a marker of their priorities earlier in the week.

"For the families, we wish to make certain from the standpoint of being tested, if need be, that there be no cost to the families," Pelosi said at a press conference on Monday night.

"For the families, if they're tormented by school closings and oldsters must stay home - who must have medical leave because they're affected - that they're going to have coronavirus-related paid sick and family leave," Pelosi said.

Schumer added presently Tuesday that "Trump and his administration should be putting people before corporations, and that they should be focused on taking appropriate steps to stay the American people and their economic security safe."

Despite the disagreements, sentiment in Congress is one in all urgency.

"We've have to be compelled to work with the president. we won't let the argument get within the way of getting something in situ," said Kildee.
