A 51-year-old Nigerian man, Ronayerin Ogolor, has been sentenced to 3 years in prison for commiting net(Internet) fraud within the United States.
Ogolor, who naturalized inside the US had scammed hundreds of thousands of dollars from thirteen victims from around the US and Italy.
In October 2019, Ogolor pleaded guilty to one counted of conspiracy to commit twine(Wire) fraud and his role in an online love scam that targeted singles a number of them elderly seeking out love on dating sites.
On Thursday, June 18, he become sentenced through US Chief District Judge, Beth Phillips, and became ordered to pay $871,739 in restitution to his thirteen victims.
Ogolor and his accomplices created several online dating profiles and contacted Western womens ‘with whom they cultivated a sense of love and romance.’ according to a statement from the USA Department of Justice.
Once they'd evolved relationships and 'love' with their clients, they proceeded to ask for cash for hospital fees, travel expenses, ‘customs expenses,’ ‘golfing import taxes,’ or investment opportunities and then after the victims pay, they get extra money from the victims saying more funds had been needed ‘to release the package’ or ‘to pay customs expenses’ on money or gold.
According to a statement from the USA Department of Justice, some ladies even sold their personal properties, including houses and cars, to raise cash for Ogolor and his allies.
According to prosecutors, Ogolor and his cohorts fraudulently checks from buisnesses with the assist of their unsuspecting sufferers and opened numerous bank accounts in his names and in the names of sham groups where the victims deposited their cash into.
