The judgment, delivered by Justice Nwosu-Iheme on April 28, 2025, found Nwachukwu guilty of the murder of his wife, who tragically passed away on April 8, 2022.
It can be recalled that Nwachukwu was first arraigned on June 3, 2022, by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (OAGF) on behalf of the Federal Government. He faced 23 counts, including culpable homicide punishable by death, spousal battery, cruelty to children, and criminal intimidation, among others.
Throughout the trial, 25 documents were presented as evidence by the prosecution. In his defense, Nwachukwu personally testified, called four witnesses, and tendered four exhibits to support his claims.
Before the sentencing, Nwachukwu’s lawyer, Reginald Nwali, pleaded for the court’s leniency. However, the prosecuting counsel, Mrs. Aderonke Imala, urged the court to apply the full weight of the law without compromise.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme ultimately sentenced Nwachukwu to death by hanging on Count 1. In addition, he was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment each on Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18. He also received six months’ imprisonment for Count 10 and three years for Count 11.
The court further imposed fines of ₦500,000 and ₦200,000 on Counts 6 and 7, respectively.
